House of Brandt has quietly become one of my favorite houses, and Genesis is where it all began. I’ve already fallen for London Fog, Guava Sorbet, and Bois de Santal, so going back to the brand’s very first fragrance felt inevitable. And winter is the right season for it — Genesis is rich, warm, and quietly imposing, the kind of scent that only makes sense once the temperature drops.

First Impressions: Saffron, Then Cassis
Genesis opens loud, but not careless. Saffron hits first — intense, slightly metallic, almost medicinal for a moment, in the way of some Arabic compositions. Before that sharpness can settle, cassis sweeps in and changes the story, adding a dark, jammy sweetness somewhere between blackcurrant syrup and overripe berries.
There’s even a fleeting illusion of cherry — not listed in the pyramid, but unmistakable on skin — that adds a syrupy richness. The opening is sweet, luxurious, and faintly powdery.

After a few minutes the rose emerges — not fresh or dewy, but dark, spicy, and deeply sensual, veiled in saffron threads and a thread of smoke. Javanol adds a modern, airy woodiness that keeps the rose from turning heavy or old-fashioned. I’m usually wary of classic roses (the “grandmotherly” kind), but Genesis never goes there. The result is an almost velvety accord: a spicy, woody, faintly sweet tobacco rose.
The Dry-Down
The base is smooth and deeply satisfying. Sandalwood takes over gradually, softening everything into a creamy warmth. Tobacco adds depth and a subtle spice that sometimes reads like cinnamon, while cashmere wood rounds the whole thing into something tangible and soothing.
What’s left is deep, creamy, woody, and addictive — no sharpness, just a smooth, nearly airy blend of rose, sandalwood, saffron, and cashmere that feels refined and expensive.
Performance
Genesis lasts for several long hours — excellent longevity — but its projection is restrained. It’s strong yet close-wearing: a personal scent rather than one that announces itself across a room. If you like fragrances that people only notice when they lean in, this is that kind of perfume.

Genesis is bold, dark, and unapologetically sexy, but it never tips into excess — there’s real sophistication holding it together. It’s unisex without being neutral: safe for any gender, but still a statement.
